For years National Geographic was berated for showing incredibly patronizing and racist photos of people in Africa. A common critique was: why is it OK to show bare-chested women in Africa when it would be considered porn to photograph a white women? There seemed to be a double standard regarding people's bodies, as if they were somehow more different that our norms did not apply to African bodies. That critique is problematic in that not every group of people has such strict guidelines for being covered up as we do, just as other people see women in the US as revealing too much with their clothes.

National Geographic, amid criticism in the mid-1990s, started to take some of these ideas under consideration. Below are nine photos taken from various National Geographic websites. The last one is a photo of Naomi Campbell on the cover of a magazine spread (I couldn't resist, it fits this assignment so well and it represents recent trends in fashion). Use four to complete your assignment. In the assignment, make sure you describe the photo so that we know which one you are discussing.
